'STANLEY MELTZOFF – PICTURE MAKER'

Special first edition by Stanley Meltzoff and IGFA historian Mike Rivkin, this is the first book ever to be released on the life and work of this extraordinary artist. Meltzoff's storied career began with a classical education in the arts, five years in Italy as an illustrator for The Stars and Stripes army newspaper during WWII, and decades as a brilliant commercial artist. His pulp and science fiction art for the likes of Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein are cult classics today, and his 65 covers for Scientific American remain unequalled. In 1976, Meltzoff's classic bicentennial imagery appeared on the cover of every AT&T phone book in the United States - more than 176 million in all. In 1970, the artist combined his years of avid SCUBA diving with his vast illustration experience to produce a series of bonefish paintings for Sports Illustrated. He went on to a hugely successful second career, diving to observe game fish in all the world's seas and dazzling the sporting media with the art that resulted. Meltzoff paintings of billfish, tuna, and other species now hang in the world's finest museums and collections of sporting art. His death in 2006 stilled a brush that will never be equalled. Stanley Meltzoff - Picture Maker (2010, Silverfish Press) is a fascinating retrospective look at this remarkable artist. Included are more than 190 plates of Meltzoff's own art throughout his career, plus a full-size limited edition lithograph of one his most famous sailfish paintings (image attached). The book is bound in special blue cloth and features a signed-and-numbered bookplate tipped in. Indisputably the finest fish painter of all time, Stanley Meltzoff was an astounding talent and this is his story.
